One cannot realize spiritual truths as long as their mind is violated by evil thoughts. It is in the pure heart and the clear understanding that the truth of spirit is revealed and experienced directly. For the purification and enlightenment of mind, the yog gives the eightfold means or the ‘Ashtanga Yog’. |
Ashtanga Yog : |
The ashtanga yog consists of eight disciplines for the purification and enlightenment of mind- yam, niyam, asan, pranayama, pratyahar, dharana, dhyan and samadhi. |
Yam:
The first discipline consists ‘yam’ (or restrain) consists ahingsha, sattya, astheya, bhrahmacharya and aparigraha. ‘Yam’ or in literal meaning death takes different forms and rushes at every individual, the five3 mentioned components helps to prevent it in some ways and slow it down. |

Niyam:
It is the second discipline niyam or culture, the ‘niyam’ literally means rule. These contain the basic culture and rules an individual needs to overcome physical and mental obstacles. It consists the practice of certain rules or good habits such as- ‘sauche’, ‘santosh’, ‘tapashya’, ‘swadhaye’ and ‘ishwarporigraha’. |

Asan:
It is the discipline of the body posture and positions for the adoption of steady and comfortable movements. The Indian Yogic philosophy mentions a vast amount of asans with its even larger que of benefits but it is necessary to understand the primary motive of performing asans. Asans are nothing but simple postures to maintain a good health of the physical body. Its most important task is to keep the skull, cervical and spinal cord in a nearly straight alignment. This helps enhance the body balance, promote better movement and helps remove a lot of physical and skeletal problems. |

Pranayam:
‘Pran’ means life and pranayama means the controlling of life forces. On a more technical basis, it is the regulation of breathing. It includes controlled inhale, exhale and suspension of breathing process either before or after inhale and exhale. Pranayam help in maintaining the health of the internal organs of the body as well as strengthen the functioning of the respiratory system. The rhythm of breathing also has great significance in concentration and meditation. |

Pratyahar:
Pranayam is not completely possible without pratyahara. It consists withdrawing the focus from our five senses which are always heightened and focusing it on the internal senses of the body and mind. When the senses are under the control of the mind it helps create a better understanding of the mind and the functioning of the body. When the sense is more focused on the internal functions of the body it becomes easier to understand the problems and find solutions to them. It is very difficult to attain this state but not impossible. |

Dharana:
Dharana is a mental discipline that consists the fixing of attention on a particular desired matter. The matter focused on might be external or internal to the individual. The ability to keep one’s attention steadily and strongly fixed on some object is the testing of fitness for entering higher stages of yog and meditation. |
Dhyan:
Dhyan is the very next step of dharana. It involves searching for sattya or ultimate truth of the matter on which the individual focused on in dharana. |
Samadhi:
It is the final ‘anga’ of the ashtanga yog. It is the mind’s absorbtion in the contemplation of the matter the individual focused on. This samadhi is completely different form the samadhi the yogic philosophy states. |

Pancha Kosh : |
The pancha kosh is a concept that describes the koshs or sheaths of the body that covers oneself. There is a total of five kosh- annyamoy kosh, pranamoy kosh, monomoy kosh, vigyanmoy kosh and anadamoy kosh. Each of these five kosh focuses on a particular part of oneself. The kosh therapy includes treatment and curing of problems and diseases by mending the pancha kosh. The annyamoy kosh oversees the constituent of the physical body and the food and nutrients that forms it. It is the most observable layer of human body comprising the skin, bones and muscles. It displays the behavioral factors and genetically inherited characteristics. The pranamoy kosh is concerned with the fundamental 11 systems of the body that enables the and administers different functions in our body. It helps in development of the inherited genetical characteristics and behavior. Pranayam is necessary for the proper maintenance and development of the organs of the 11 systems for a healthy and undisturbed working of the body as a whole. It also helps to maintain the geometric structure of the body.
The monomoy kosh is responsible for the psychological and brain activities. It involves everything we see and perceive around us and store in our mind without verifying the truth of the information or without knowing the cause of the events. This unverified information that is stored in an individual’s mind can later lead to problems and misunderstandings which can hinder with their overall development. The vigyanmoy kosh is responsible for the verification and rectification of the information seen, perceived and stored by the mind. It plays a key role in healing psychological disorders and stereotypical myths. Thus, after the whole body has been thoroughly taken care of and maintained properly for its maximum potential performance, one can be truly happy and search for the ultimate truth of life. This is known as the anadamoy kosh. |
Kundalini Yog : |
Kundalini Yog is the practice that focuses on the uncoiling, awakening and channelizing the energy in our body stored in the seven chakras. Each of these seven chakras administer a particular part of the body. There is a way in which these coiled chakras should be awakened for mental, physical and spiritual development of an individual. The word ‘kundalini’ means coiled up, thus, Kundalini yog is the correct process of unfolding or uncoiling the seven chakras. If this process is nit done correctly it can be harmful for the health and development of one. The seven chakras are- sahoshrar, agga, bisuddha, anhata, munipur or navi chakra, sadhisthan and muladhar. These chakras oversee and enhances the functioning of a single gland or for few a group of glands. |
